The Western U.S. Event is Release 03’s clearest example of visualization shaping meaning. It also makes it vulnerable to visual exaggeration.

The renderings are useful because they help readers understand what a witness might mean by an orange luminous source and smaller red objects. The Colorado Springs / Cheyenne Mountain case shows the same visual problem in a different form. SURVXCOM Publication Rules for Release 03 Images

Rule 1 — Label every visual category

Every image should be identified as a captured photo, digital rendering, notional map, document scan, site-survey image, or witness-aided sketch.

Rule 2 — Never let a rendering pretend to be evidence capture

If the image is a rendering, the caption and surrounding paragraph must say so clearly.

Rule 3 — Keep scale claims out of notional maps

Do not derive precise distance, size, altitude, or location claims from notional maps.

Rule 4 — Separate scene documentation from object documentation

  • Does the file state that the image is notional?
  • Is scale known?
  • Is location exact, generalized, or withheld?
  • Is time known?
  • Is metadata available?
  • Does the image show the phenomenon or the observation environment?
  • What caption would be accurate and non-sensational?

Useful research pathways include image forensics books, visual intelligence analysis resources, media literacy books, field observation notebooks, atmospheric optics resources, and intelligence analysis books. These are support resources, not replacements for primary-source reading.

Conclusion: What Release 03 Shows and What It Does Not Show

Release 03 shows more than text. It shows how the archive is being made visually legible.
